Migraines Q & A
What are migraines?
Migraines are a type of headache that causes a severe throbbing sensation that may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to odors, light, and sound. When left untreated, migraines may require that you lie in bed for a few hours or a few days.
Researchers aren’t certain of the exact cause of migraines but suspect that it involves changes in the way the trigeminal nerve functions, along with fluctuations in certain brain chemicals.
Although there is no cure for migraines, Republic Spine and Pain offers many innovative treatments to help you get relief from your symptoms.
What are migraine symptoms?
Migraine symptoms vary in type and severity, and the symptoms can last for hours to days and recur, sometimes several times a month. Common symptoms include:
- Severe head pain
- Throbbing or pulsing sensation
- Nausea and vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, odors, or sound
Some people also experience an aura before migraines begin, which may include seeing flashes or zigzags of light, feeling pins and needles in the arms or legs, general body weakness, or speech problems.
After your pain resolves, you may feel drained, irritable, or depressed. Post-pain symptoms may also cause you to feel more energetic or have cravings for sweet food.
How are migraines diagnosed?
A migraine diagnosis occurs after a review of your medical history and symptoms. Diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or a CT scan, may be needed to rule out other causes of your head pain. You may also be asked to keep a headache diary, which may be used to identify your migraine triggers.
What are the treatments for migraines?
Republic Spine and Pain doctors develop individualized treatment plans for the management of migraines. Your treatment plan may include lifestyle modifications to help prevent the onset of your head pain, such as:
- Avoiding your triggers
- Engaging in regular exercise
- Establishing a routine sleep pattern
- Practicing relaxation techniques
Medical treatment may include over-the-counter or prescription medications that help relieve symptoms. Botox® injections, acupuncture, biofeedback, and behavior therapy may also be recommended.
The pain management experts at Republic Spine and Pain also offer four different injectable medications for the treatment of migraines. These injections are a new treatment option for migraines that you receive monthly. Each of the four different medications works similarly.
